The
People We Serve
CAPI participants are hard working people, providing for
themselves and their families. In most instances participants are foreign
born, and have come to this country to escape war, economic crises or civic
unrest. Like previous generations of immigrants and refugees, CAPI participants
strengthen our local economy through their participation in our workforce,
and add much to our local arts and cultural community. Often times however,
CAPI participants need a good deal of initial assistance in settling in
their new community, adjusting socially, learning English and getting that
first job opportunity.
Of the 3,500 individuals CAPI serves annually:
Approximately 60% are Southeast Asian (mostly Hmong) and 40% are East African
(mostly Oromo/Ethiopian and Somali). CAPI does serve many other immigrant
and refugee communities, but these communities typically represent less
than 1% of the total population served.
Approximately 57% of those served are female and 43% are male
Approximately 92% earned less than 50% of the areas median income
Approximately 75% have limited English-speaking skills upon enrolling in
CAPI programs
